When used with the Electronic Leaf Controller the leaf is positioned amongst your plants to sense the amount of water falling on them. 

When the leaf dries out it sends a 'message' to the control box which in turn sends a 'message' to the solenoid valve causing it to open and allow water to flow to your misting equipment.
